Cai Yanxi

Raised in an environment steeped in traditional craftsmanship, Cai Yanxi developed an early artistic fascination with wood carving patterns and traditional painted ornamentation. After navigating the industrialization of oil painting and the inner conflicts of commercial creation, he broke free from mechanical repetitive production, upheld original creative principles, and completed his transformation from an art dealer to an independent artist. He has since devoted himself to exploring the essence of art and self-identity.

His paintings externalize intricate inner spiritual worlds, constructing a unique visual grammar blending ethereal oriental imagery and rigorous geometric composition through dots, lines and planes. The door recurs as a core symbolic motif, representing thresholds for breaking through predicaments, letting go of obsessions and achieving spiritual awakening. His creations merge oriental ink aesthetics with Western oil painting techniques. Early works such as Dolphin Bay address marine ecological crises, while Whale Fall interprets the circularity of life. His later Enlightenment trilogy delves into Zen philosophy, human nature and temporal logic, marking the maturation of his stylistic system.

Cai Yanxi’s works have been exhibited in over 40 domestic and international art events across Germany, Australia, France, Hong Kong and Macau. Using canvases as spiritual practice spaces, he reflects social realities without depicting human figures directly. His creations balance rational analysis and emotional expression, conveying profound reflections on life, obsession and spiritual self-salvation.
